My Favorite Christmas Song, What's Yours?
58
I'm sure you have a favorite Christmas song, don't you? I have mine and I really enjoy listening to it as well as to other Christmas songs. It’s that time of the year again!
In the Philippines, the songs start being played as soon as the “-ber” months come around. Yes, we hear the songs as early as September. That’s how early we start celebrating Christmas here. Then this extends way into the New Year and officially end with the feast of the Three Kings or Epiphany.
Christmas Songs
I love listening to Christmas songs because they are all either happy or sentimental tunes. So when I hear them, I kind of get into the mood for Christmas.
There are several Christmas songs that I like listening to. I can classify them into two groups: Traditional and Pop.
Among the traditional ones are: “Oh Holy Night”, “It Came Upon the Midnight Clear”, “Do You Hear What I Hear?”, just to name a few.
Included in the pop ones are: “Christmas Story”, “You’re All I Want for Christmas”, “Little Christmas Tree”, “Give Love on Christmas Day”, “Silver Bells”.
Oh, and I also like some Philippine Christmas songs like: “Pasko na Sinta Ko” (trans: It's Christmas My Love) and “Pasko Ay Sumapit” (trans: Christmas Has Come).
However, my favourite Christmas song is really “O Little Town of Bethlehem”.
My Favorite Christmas Song
Yes, “O Little Town of Bethlehem” is my favorite song. I just love the richness of its tune. Every time I hear the tune, I can almost imagine how Bethlehem must have looked like when Jesus was born as “...The silent stars go by...”.
When I was searching in YouTube for the video that I will embed in this hub, I discovered that there is another version of this song. The words are the same but the tune is not. However, the version that is my favourite is the one that am presenting here.
Another reason why I love this song is that, it is beautiful whether sung as solo as in the video below, or as a choral piece as in the second video.
This singer, Connie Talbot, is the youngest singing sensation, who first wowed everyone in the show, “Britain’s Got Talent” in 2007.
I actually just discovered her in YouTube and instantly fell in love with her pure, angelic voice and of course her rendition of my favorite Christmas song.
Here are the Lyrics Once Again:
O little town of Bethlehem,
How still we see thee lie!
Above thy deep and dreamless sleep
The silent stars go by;
Yet in thy dark streets shineth
The everlasting Light;
The hopes and fears of all the years
Are met in thee tonight.
For Christ is born of Mary,
And gathered all above,
While mortals sleep, the angels keep
Their watch of wondering love.
O morning stars, together
Proclaim the holy birth!
And praises sing to God the King,
And peace to men on earth.
How silently, how silently,
The wondrous gift is giv'n!
So God imparts to human hearts
The blessings of His heav'n.
No ear may hear His coming,
But in this world of sin,
Where meek souls will receive Him, still
The dear Christ enters in.
O holy Child of Bethlehem!
Descend to us, we pray;
Cast out our sin and enter in,
Be born in us today.
We hear the Christmas angels
The great glad tidings tell;
O come to us, abide with us,
Our Lord Emmanuel.
My Favorite Christmas Song as a Choral Piece
When “O Little Town of Bethlehem” is sung as a choral piece, the harmony of voices brings out the richness of its tune. Don’t you agree?
A Little Bit of History
The story is that, Philip Brooks, an Episcopal clergyman, visited Bethlehem in 1865. He was so inspired by the visit that he wrote a poem in 1867. I don’t know why it took him 2 years after to write the poem. There is no record about this.
Anyway, a year after the poem came out, Lewis Redner, the church organist, created the music for the poem. Redner supposedly titled the music “St. Louis”. It is believed that the song was first sung by their Sunday School children’s choir. Eventually the poem and music became known as “O Little Town of Bethlehem”.
Ralph Vaughan Williams OM, an English composer, later harmonized the music and thus the song in its present form now, with all the voices and instrumentals.

Beautiful Hub, we all need that Xmass spirit...
"Silent Night, Holy Night" is certainly my fav.
Thank you very much!
"Let It Snow" and "Have a Holly Jolly Christmas" are probably my favorites. However, "Christmas in Hollis" by RUN DMC seems to always get people laughing and saying things like,"Wow, I remember that!" Thanks for sharing.
I'm a huge fan of stop-motion animation. By far, my favorite Christmas movie is "The Year Without A Santa Clause." It's a classic.
Cool post. Thanks for sharing.

My dear friend Jill just a totally fun hub ! I would like to now formally wish you a Merry Christmas !
Jill, my friend, as always you have produced a top notch hub. I loved the videos and the pics and the thoughts of Christmas. I have a hard time choosing a favorite song; I like all of them from "All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth" to "O' Little Town of Bethlehem." I think if I had to choos though it would be "Silent Night" and "Angels we ahve heard on high. Love you, Jill and Merry Christmas!"
I really enjoyed listening to that song being song. She is very talented and full with spirit.
my fav CHRISTMAS CAROL is SILENT NIGHT and then WE 3 KINGS OF ORIENT ARE. I haven't seen the Film 'The Year Without A Santa Clause' mentioned above by 'askjanbrass'.
One of my favorites is Little Drummer Boy. It's a touching story especially if you are an animal lover.
Wow! its so nice when someone makes it nice and simple to respond, My favorite is Silent Night. I got to sing it once in front of my church, solo, it was my finest hour. But as life does sometimes , my voice changed, and that was that. I thank you that you reminded me of that, during one of these trying holidays. I bow unto you.
My favourite ever Christmas song would have to be East 17 - Stay Another Day. A really great song without any unnecessary Christmas tackiness.
Nope, the best ever is either Chestnuts roasting on an open fire or let it snow the dean martin version....Classic
The Carpenters "Merry Christmas Darling" is my all time favorite. Just a lovely, sentimental song.
My favorite Christmas Song is The Little Drummer Boy. There are so many different versions but there isn't one of them that I don't love. I must also add the Friendly Beasts by Garth Brooks. It's a song about the animals in the stable the night Jesus was born. If you haven't heard it listen to it. It's absolutely beautiful. Love this Hub. Very good for lifting Holiday Spirit.
Oh, Holy Night is probably my favorite, and Jewel does a pretty good job with it because she sings it in a traditional way and can hit all the high notes. Was it the Little Drummer Boy that Bing Crosby sang with David Bowie a long time ago? I remembered liking what they did with that, also.
Thanks for the touching and sentimental post.
nice hub.
So many great Christmas songs but many are old these days.
It's hard to pick one favorite Christmas song. I enjoy so many. I can listen to them continualluy. Such a spiritual uplifting. Merry Christmas!
I have three favorite Christmas songs - It's Christmas All Over the World Tonight (not sure if this is the right title :D) by Sheena Easton and a song sung by Kuh Ledesma with these lyrics - Kapiling ka na tuwing sasapit ang Pasko, sa tamis ng ating suyuan noon (forgot the title also) and A Ray of Hope which we used to sing during choral contests :).
Wonderful hub. My favorite song is hard to pick. I love "Do You Hear What I Hear" and "Silver Bells" and "What Child is This". I also like the more modern ensemble songs like "Feed The World".
I am not a big fan of "Jingle Bells" but it is an easy song to teach kids.
Dearest Jill,
You touched me so tenderly with this hub. It made me cry in fact, because it brought back so many memories of my days singing lead soprano in the church choir. I can't sing as well any more because of my illness, but I can still sing.I just don't have the beautiful soprano voice I had a couple of years ago. I loved christmas time because I just adored the carols. When I watched your video of "O Little Town of Bethlehem" and saw the real baby lying there as the Baby Jesus, it meant so much to me, as well as in the last scene where they show Joseph bending down to Mary and the baby Jesus, was truly beautiful. I would have to say my favourite two carols would be "Mary's Boy Child" and "Silent Night". I did however sing "O Holy Night" in a talent quest which was run throughout Australia, and I was highly commended, even though I didn't win, that made we feel good that I got that remark from the judges. I have only been in hubpages for two months. I would like to be a follower of yours, and invite you to be a follower of mine. I hope you have a happy and safe Christmas Jill, God Bless and thanks again for these wonderful memories of "my good old days" BB
I'm a big fan of christmas songs. Winter wonderland, silent night, silver bells, white christmas, jingle bell rock...the list goes on...are just a few of my favorites;)
I love your hub. I am glad it is featured here on hubpages otherwise I would not have seen it.
I love the videos you have chosen and the history lesson you gave us of your favorite song. I love all traditional Christmas songs, but I think my favorite is 'O Holy Night'. It gives me a warm feeling as I am reminded of the message of Christmas. Thank you for sharing and allowing us to share our views on Christmas carols.
My favorite Christmas song is probably "Silver Bells" for no particular reason. However - and I know this one isn't too popular - my all-time favorite is "I Wonder As I Wander." I guess to me it's more of a winter song than Christmas-y, which is why I chose "Silver Bells" first. "I Wonder As I Wander" is so melancholy that it perfectly captures the feel of the season to me. It's also beautiful, especially the high notes towards the end.
Has to ne "O, Holy Night" for me. And Michael Crawford version.
Picking one favorite is tough, but I think it would be "Away in a Manger." I love the simple tune and the beautiful sentiment of the words. My daughter's birthday is December 19. I've often wondered how hard it would have been for me to have to placed her, as Mary placed her new-born son, into a manger.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Personally, I like O Holy Night and Silver Bells best, but other favorites come and go.
Wow! Fabulous hub. I love so many Christmas songs, its hard to chose. My favorites are probably "Silent Night" and "O Holy Night". Then there is "I want a Hippopatamous for Christmas" and "Santa Baby"...the Eartha Kitt version.
I love 'The First Noel' and 'God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen.' This was a really fun hub to read thanks!
I love a song named All I want for christmas is you by Mariah Carey. Always pump me up. I am mad enough to listen the song during the year as I love it so much.
I like O Little Town of Bethlehem and I can visualize it; but I am still learning how to play it. My favourite is Angels We Have Heard On High.I like the gloria in excelsis deos; and I can play it - basically.A spirited band or a good choir can do that song justice! Thanks for the hub.
Hi jill of alltrades!!! Oh Little Town of Bethlehem is definitely a favorite of mine as well! At my house we have the tradition of breaking out the Christmas music and carols the day after Thanksgiving....For me Christmas wouldn't be the same were it not for Handel's Messiah playing all and everyday in the background!
Thanks for the inspiring Christmas hub...although I'm a few weeks overdue....But that's the beauty of Christmas music:the everlasting message! Good hub!
'A Merry Jingle' by The Greedies is my all-time favourite

My favorite Christmas songs are those that deal with the fun and joy of the season; the silly songs, like "Holly Jolly Christmas", but I also like old sentimental ones like "I'll Be Home For Christmas". What a perfect, jolly good Hub for the season Jill:)
