Yellow Is My Favorite Color, What's Yours?
80All of us have our own favorite color. Mine is yellow, what’s yours?
Ever since I can remember, the color yellow has always attracted me. Somehow, I feel elated and alive whenever I wear something yellow. There was even a time in my life when half of my clothes were in various shades of yellow. I was not really conscious about this until one day during an acquaintance party, somebody used it as an identifying aid – describing me as the “the cute girl in yellow”. There were others wearing yellow during that party but somehow everyone just knew that I was “the cute girl in yellow”. Ha ha ha.... Can you guess why?
The Meaning of Yellow
Before I learned what the color yellow means, I already had so many favorite yellow things like sunshine and golden roses; mangoes, bananas and corn; yellow ribbons and canaries. Somehow I just seem to gravitate towards yellow things.
Then in my readings, I encountered those questions that ask what your favourite color is and you will be told what that means. So I learned that yellow symbolizes enlightenment, creativity, happiness, intellect, eloquence and the power of persuasion. It also means wisdom, joy, optimism, energy, movement, travel and the promise of a positive future.
Wow, I like that! Wouldn’t you? No wonder I’m attracted to yellow!
Unfortunately, yellow is also associated with cowardice. However this is no longer true here in the Philippines. Why? Because yellow is now the new symbol of bravery. I will talk about this though in the later part of this hub. At this point, let me tell you about some other aspects or ideas about the color yellow.
More Yellow Colours
The Color Yellow and Health
In health and healing, it is advisable to use yellow if you want to promote clarity of thought. Yellow also energizes people and relieves depression. This is probably the reason why hospital walls usually have yellow paint.
Those who are into chakra healing and understanding know that the color yellow is associated with the solar plexus chakra. This chakra (which is found between your navel and sternum or approximately your gut), deals with identity or self esteem. So wearing yellow will not only develop your self esteem but also your “gut feel”.
Yellow is definitely a perky color. It is associated with the healing qualities of the sun. So it gives energy, warmth, optimism, happiness and light. Now I understand why I feel lighter every time I wear something yellow.
So if you want any of the following:
- sharper memory, clarity of thought, concentration skills, alertness;
- relief from “burnout” and exhaustion;
- developed self esteem and “gut feel”; and
- protection against lethargy and depression, then the color yellow is what you need. Use it on various things around you like your wall or a vase of yellow flowers.
People who suffer from SAD or “seasonal affective disorder” or “winter blues” may get an extra lift if they wear something yellow or surround themselves with bright, yellow things.
If however you are suffering from palpitations and nervousness, then the energetic effect of yellow is not the answer. Rather you will need the calming effects of blue and green.
The Color Yellow and Products/Advertisement
Yellow is considered a children’s color because it brings happiness or joy and anticipation. It has a relaxing and yet warming effect just like sunshine.
So yellow is considered as a good choice to advertise children’s products or to attract people to your place. Just think of McDonald’s and its big yellow arch or Jollibee and the big bee. Yellow is not a good color however if you are advertising a product that is meant to represent stability and seriousness.
It is known that people who are blind to other colors can see yellow. Thus this color (in combination with black) is used to paint those road signs and road barriers so we see them readily.
Yellow also signifies clarity of message. Think of your yellow pad and yellow pencils. Then there is “yellow pages” in your telephone directory and the yellow color of taxis and buses.
However, yellow is not a good color when it refers to journalism because “yellow journalism” is synonymous with sensationalism in journalistic reportage.
yellow flowers
Yellow Flowers and their Meaning
In general, yellow flowers mean happiness and friendship. However, during the Victorian era, yellow roses signified jealousy. This has now changed of course to its present meaning of friendship, companionship, joy, and freedom in life.
Yellow tulips also symbolize hopeless or unrequited love while marigolds can mean jealousy, grief and cruelty. So you have to be careful what kind of flowers you are sending to your love ones.
The Hyponyms of Yellow
The following are some words that also mean yellow
· amber (a deep yellow color)
· canary or canary yellow (a moderate yellow with a greenish tinge)
· gamboge (a strong yellow color)
· gold (another deep yellow color)
· greenish yellow (a shade of yellow tinged with green)
· lemon or lemon yellow (dark yellow)
· maize (another dark yellow color)
· orange yellow (a shade of yellow tinged with orange)
· pale yellow or straw (a yellow tint; yellow diluted with white)
· saffron (yellow tinged with orange)
By the way, when you make yellow or any other color lighter by adding white, you call it a tint. Adding black or darkening a color makes it a shade.
The Color Yellow around the World
The color yellow represents the element of Air in Greek history and philosophy. It symbolizes the sun, grain, and the power of thought.
In Chinese history and culture, yellow is associated with royalty and respect. It is the color of emperors during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Saffron robes on the other hand are synonymous with Buddhist monks.
Yellow is the color for mourning in Egypt while to merchants of India, yellow is the symbol for peace.
In Polynesia, yellow is also a color of royalty and divinity. And to the Zuni, yellow symbolizes the North. In Aztec culture on the other hand, yellow means food because it is the color of corn, their primary food.
While yellow has many positive meanings like, happiness, intellect, energy, and clarity of thought, it also has a negative connotation meaning sickness (as in jaundice) and cowardice. In Japan however, yellow represents courage, and so too in the Philippines.
Yellow Means Bravery in the Philippines
The new meaning of yellow emerged when former Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino, was assassinated as he came home to the Philippines last August 21, 1983. We waited for his arrival by tying yellow ribbons on trees (inspired by Tony Orlando’s song, Tie a Yellow Ribbon).
The color yellow later became the symbol of Cory Aquino’s (our former president and wife of Ninoy Aquino) bravery and the first People Power Revolution, a bloodless revolution. Cory’s followers and supporters wore the yellow color and are called the Yellow Army.
Since then, the color yellow has symbolized bravery and a bloodless revolution. Now another yellow army is emerging as people wear yellow ribbons and demonstrate their love for Cory and her legacy. At the same time, the color yellow symbolizes Noynoy Aquino's (Ninoy's and Cory’s son) quest to continue the “revolution” started by his mother.

As usual.....very nicely done, well presented and very informative.Great article!
yellow in england and holland is the colour of... hate! The pigment for yellow used to be cadmium as it is very light-fast but as this is a fairly toxic metal it slowly became banned in many if not all eurpean countries. The first country to ban it was sweden which apparently caused a rather unforeseen problem (at the time) with the swedish flag making industry.. :)
mine is green and in my little wordless book that I use to share the Gospel with kids it means grow.
hi jill,
great hub, well researched. that's a stunning yellow rose image.
blue.
Lovely hub, Jill and so informative. I really believe in the power of color and we use it in our design business to bring out all the positive aspects you mentioned. As usual your photographs are a stunning compliment to your wonderful copy. Oh my favorite color is green, if you haven't guessed!
Sorry Jill, yup I forgot.. or maybe avoided it. Difficult choice, my favourites would be blue and green, especially the myriad of shades of green in the early and late spring.. and as green=blue+yellow and the shade of green depends on the amount of yellow I guess we connect after all...
Lovely hub. Yellow is definitely an uplifting color and it also reminds me of optimism and positive thinking. It suits you perfectly. Perhaps our personality dictates what color we like. I'm definitely one for subtler colors like white and blue and even green. Maybe, a hub on other color choices?
Again, another interesting and delightful read. Thanks.
Great hub, Jill...again!
I think anginwu brings up an intersting point when suggeted "our personality dictates what color we like"
I don't have one favorite, although purple is probably the closest. I love dark, rich, colors, Burgany, Sapphire, Forest Green, Teal, Purple and Black. My closet contains mostly black with a smattering of the other colors. I've been told I have a little "Goth bent" to me personality wise. I've noticed my oldest son (now 22) favors black as well.
Jill I have learned more about the color yellow then I ever thought possible. Nicely done , you never fail to educate me ! I like Purple for some reason , I just think it is a very regal color.
What a very "sunny" article! Thanks for such an in-depth look into an unusual topic.
As silly as it sounds, I've always had a hard time pinpointing my favorite color, it changes with my mood or my life stage. I once worked in an import store where we often laughed and said "everything looks incredible in the right setting". It's so true of colors as well. Thanks for sharing yours...
I shall have to do a series of Computer Art based on yellow, I think that would be enlightening ( pardon the pun) and self satisfying and maybe significant and meaningful to others and their emotions.
Red is my HOT favourite, but I do love yellow, Jill.
My favorite color is purple but I still enjoyed your article on Yellow very much. Thank you for the illumination.
Enjoyed that, like the good gentleman above me my fav colour is purple !
I like Silver. I also love Yellow Roses. They smell the best!
I'm not sure I have a fvourite colour - I just love colours anyway! I read once, many years ago, that yellow was the colour of madness, I have no idea why! Anyway a little madness can be a very good thing!
Thanks for sharing
Love and peace
Tony

Thanks for dropping by. Well, indeed there are some people who like you, do not have any favorite color. That's ok. At least you love colors.

jill . as always stopping by one of your Hubs always brings sunshine. . and here your words are as bright as ever;) Personally, I love pink. . so anything under the red umbrella works for me! Not sure if I love pink because when I was a little girl my mother never let me wear pink . it had to be "light blue" which she claimed went with my eyes. . my thoughts were so if my eyes are blue why cant I wear pink . I already have the blue going on!!!
Thumbs up .. positively awesome as always:)
