Trusting - A Birthday Prayer/Poem at Ninety Years Old
71I depart from my usual hubs and give space to a prayer/poem written by my mother who just turned 90.
I planned to write her a tribute but somehow that never materialized for one reason or another. Anyway, we celebrated her birthday in a big way because it is really worth celebrating.
She assumed the roles of both dad and mom for all of us 5 kids since our dad passed away more than 30 years ago. She has kept our family together through thick and thin through all these years. Her grit, determination, faith and love have always been our inspiration.
My mom always loved to write but this love for writing has taken a back seat from all the other things she has to attend to as sole parent. She has recently taken up this love again and what I share here is a prayer/poem she wrote just a few days before her 90th birthday.
My Mom's Prayer/Poem
TRUSTING
Lord, teach me the song of Eternity
So I may sing it every day
Lead me to accept the joy and pain
Which our earthly lives bring.
Open my eyes to the beauty of the tiniest flower
Let my clogged ears hear the message clear
Grasp me with your strong hand
Lest I stumble where I stand.
Help me to gather and burn the thorns on the way
So those who follow me
May escape the pain they bring
To whoever steps on the sting.
Free me from the uncertainties of tomorrow
That I may be spared from much sorrow
Help me to live a life of service
Until the hour of my withered flesh.
Bathe me with the water of redemption
With open arms and great affection
Clasp me to your forgiving bosom
Where I shall share, Lord, the glory of your Resurrection.

After my mom wrote this prayer/poem, she came up with another one which according to her came as an answer to this present one.
I will share this answer prayer/poem in a future hub.
My mom does not use the computer. She has an aversion for all the "techie" things we use today. So I am serving as her conduit to the world wide web.

The entire prayer/poem is so inspiring. The last stanza, in particular, is so touching and filled me with such peace and contentment. A brilliant piece! Love your Mom!
This was a wonderful poem, and I am impressed at the mental agility of your 90 year old mother. The elderly see things with such clarity and realize what is important. I spent time with my parents today (my father is 91, my mother is 81) and it is always amazing to me how well they are doing.
Thanks for sharing a wonderful poem, and happy birthday to your Mom!
Mike
My dear friend,
Just as I have opened my computer, still morning here in Athens, I felt like being blessed by this prayer...
I love this prayer and will share it with some other friends...Hugs across the miles

Jill, your mom's poetry is as beautiful and moving as your photos. I love the Mother/daughter photo. Two gorgeous babes! I assume Mom really rides that bike...wow. I bet she is also proud and honored that you have published this lovely tribute. I look forward to reading the next.
Jill: I love your mother's prayer/poem it is very touching and moves my heart to sing. I also love the pics you put with the prayer, for they show your mother's love and appreciation for life.
God bless your mother, and the rest of your family.
Thank you.
Brother Dave.
Hey lady. What a wonderful gift your mother has. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree. This is a beautiful poem. can't wait to read more from both of you.
What beautiful words your mother writes, my friend.. She is truly a wonderful soul.. I love this :)
Jill I loved reading your mothers words. What a wonderful heart. My mom will be 98 this year and every year it's counted as joy to have her still with us on this side of heaven. Though there are more waiting for her there than there are here. Daddy being one of them who went on to help prepare the home God is building for them both. Dad who was a contractor has been a resident of heaven now for 40 years. Hug your mama for me Jill. Bless you both.

My Dad died 30 years ago and my Mother just joined him, my brothers and so many others in heaven this year. Like your Mom, my Mother was not computer saavy but enjoyed my writing about our trips together and other family stories.
The fact that you still have your beautiful Mom and can share her beautiful spirit and poetry with us combined with your gorgeous photos must make her proud. Enjoy every sweet moment together and wish her a belated happy birthday and give her an extra hug the next time you see her in person.
Rating this beautiful! It truly is in so many ways!
What a wonderful share from your mother who looks so lovely at her age, that picture you posted of the two of you is great. As we age we get closer to our maker and words are often given to us to share with others, the smallest things become so much more meaningful and the need to shed our skins and expose our hearts to the world and leave footprints behind that others may follow. Peace
This is beautiful, as others expressed:) What a nice heritage, your Mother is leaving you! Thanks so much for sharing! Loved the pictures as well:)

How sweet and beautiful. I love the essence of the whole poem, so delicately presented. I especially love the line "open my eyes to the beauty of the tiniest flower." Flowers always stop me and I would stoop to see the tiniest flower. Say thank you to your mom and what a blessing she is to you and your family.Rated awesome and beautiful.
